How to Complement BT Website Builder with Google Analytics

Analytics in BT Website Builder is based on user engagement. According to the GDPR, visitors are tracked only upon consent. Therefore, BT Website Builder Analytics reflects data about visitors who accepted both essential cookies and analytics in cookies settings (and not all website visitors):

We suggest complementing BT Website Builder engagement data through Google Analytics to receive greater insights on how users engage with the website. This process requires creating a Google Analytics account. This must occur outside of BT Website Builder (Google account is required).

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. The process of creating a Google Analytics account and connecting it to a BT Website Builder project is very simple:

  1. Create a Google Analytics Account. If you use Gmail, you may already have a Google account, but we recommend creating one specifically for your business.
  2. Log in to Google Analytics. Once a Google account is created, go to www.google.com/analytics. A new Google Analytics account can be created there.
  3. Give a name to the account (we recommend the business name):

   4. Name the website that will be tracked:

This will be very important if you have different websites for your business.

Note: Choose the advanced option to create a Universal Analytics property only. Google Analytics created a new version of Google Analytics for property "GA4" but Google Analytics Universal is more robust.

  5.  Choose a category (healthcare, beauty, and fitness, etc.) and select what data should be shared with Google:

Note: The more information is shared with Google, the more new features for reporting can be developed.

  6. Agree to their terms of service.

  7. Copy the Tracking ID code:

Now that Google Analytics account is created it needs to be connected to the project in BT Website Builder account:

  8.  Open the Settings tab of the Site Builder:

  9.  Select Marketing tab:

 10. Select Google Analytics and click Connect:

11. Paste the Tracking ID code and click the Save button:

12.  Republish the website:

13.  Real-time insights into website engagement data can be viewed at the Google Analytics Dashboard:

Note: It may take some time for Google Analytics to be configured and start displaying the data.
